RIP: CARLO RAMBALDI

Special effects master and three-time Oscar winner Carlo Rambaldi has died in southern Italy after a long illness. He was 86.

Rambaldi was known as the father of “E.T.” He won special effects Oscars for Steven Spielberg’s 1982 extraterrestrial hit, as well as Ridley Scott’s film “Alien” in 1979, and John Guillermin’s “King Kong” in 1976.

I grew up following the work of Stan Winston, Rick Baker, Rob Bottin, Carlo Rambaldi, Ray Harryhausen, Jim Danforth, David Allen, Phil Tippett, Martin Bower, Brian Johnson, Derek Meddings, Peter and Harrison Ellenshaw, the Skotak Brothers to name but a few, sadly some of these people are with us anymore, but their legacy's do live on, I don't think anybody could tell you who did the FX work for say the like of Avengers, Avatar, John Carter etc... because there are far too many people from numerous companies doing the FX work these days. The FX crew on a film like Alien is tiny compared to the crew on Prometheus. It's sad that a lot of the younger generation won't appreciate the legacy that the old school FX people created !
